 Travelling with cat on Northwest Airlines??? Please Help!? I am desperate for help. I want to carry my 13 pound cat onto my flight when I move from AK to FL in a month. The problem is, the only soft sided carrier I can find (the Sherpa Delta one) that he fits in and meets airline rule weighs 4 lbs on its own so he weighs 17 lbs. in it. The limit is 15 lbs and they claim (on the phone) even if it’s 15.5 he will not be able to go. I even offered to pay extra and not bring any carry on items and they said “rules are 15 lbs and that’s all there is to say. No wiggle room.” Putting him in cargo would be the absolute worst thing! He is not easy going at all and plus he would be terrified. What I need to know is has anyone had experience carrying pets on to a flight (especially a Northwest flight) and if so how strict were they to you about the weight? What type of carrier did you use? Unfortunately, since I am moving and this is the only option so please don’t respond about how cruel I am to my cat. Hi Jenna... I noticed you asked this question a few times and received various answers. I just got off the phone with NWA to try and learn what options may be available for flying cats in cabin. As you've discovered they are not flexible with their pet travel policy. I wondered if perhaps purchasing a full fare (another seat) was an option, but it wasn't. Another avenue to consider - I'm unaware if you've already booked your flight with NWA - but if you haven't booked with NWA, there are other airlines that may be able to accommodate your cat for an in-cabin flight. I hope I can put your mind at rest when flying pets in cargo. Nearly all animals who fly in cargo do quite well even if they are very high strung/anxiou . With nervous/high-strung cats in particular they will cry for the first 1/2 hour and then settle in for the duration of the flight. Sedation of pet animals is highly discouraged by the AVMA as it can create respiratory or cardiovascular problems in high altitudes (see: http://www.avma.org/careforanimals/animatedjourneys/livingwithpets/sedate.asp ). Therefore, a couple ideas many veterinarians found that works is providing fresh catnip or Rescue Remedy... both which helps calm cats. Catnip works by causing a euphoric sensation which in the end is very calming/sedating to cats. If your cat enjoys catnip, this would be the alternative solution to help your cat prepare for a stressful trip. It's important to use fresh-grown catnip so that the oil scents are strongest. Rescue Remedy (see: http://cats.about.com/cs/healthissues/a/stress_3.htm & http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=0&cat=1448&articleid=1360 ) also has been known to be very useful for stressed situations.
